First Annual Aviation Diversity Luncheon

Aviation Student Diversity Leadership Council is hosting the first annual Aviation Diversity Luncheon in the TEC Multipurpose Room on February 21 from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

The luncheon will consist of panelists and speakers from our industry: from United Airlines, American Airlines, AeroStar Avion Institute, & more. The speakers will share a bit about their professional journey. Then, students and faculty will have a chance to ask them questions in a Q&A session. Afterwards, students will have a chance to meet them, as well as other professionals in attendance.

We are very excited about this event. Our aviation student body is incredibly diverse with students from all around the world who participate in many diverse organizations. We are hoping that this event will help spread awareness of how our industry promotes diversity, and highlight how we can continue to be more inclusive. We know it is important for ourselves and our peers to be educated on our evolving industry before we become leaders of it.

Please RSVP before February 10 by clicking here.

The Aviation Student Diversity Leadership Council is made up of leaders from NGPA, AWAM, OBAP, and WIA.

25th Anniversary of United Airlines Career Day was a Huge Success

The 25th Anniversary of United Airlines Career Day was held on October 19th, 2019. The day was enjoyed by 116 Chicago area students and 30 United employees/alumni of the SIU Aviation program.

The Airbus 320 arrived in Carbondale a few minutes after 9:00 a.m. The students disembarked from the plane to fanfare and hand-shakes from administration and aviation faculty, staff and current students. A group picture was taken by the plane before the students went with ambassadors to tour the Aviation facilities and go for introductory flights. Some students had never flown before and were able to experience an Airbus 320 and Cessna 172s for the first time. There were lots of smiles on faces as they were fed lunch by the Women in Aviation group and excited to talk about their experiences. After lunch, a presentation by Aviation department interim chair, Mike Burgener and various United employees informed students about Aviation and the opportunities that abound at this time in both pilot and maintenance fields.

After a walking tour of campus, students were screened to board the plane for the return trip home. They were treated to pizza before boarding the plane.

United Airlines Career Day 2019 is in the books and we are looking forward to the next one. Please watch our website for news on the next Career Day.

SIU Aviation and the Flying Salukis

Mention the phrase “Flying Salukis” and there can be only one image.

As a part of Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s nationally recognized aviation program, the 15- to 18-member squad plays an important role in highlighting both the aviation program and the university’s accomplishments.

The team has nine National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) titles dating back to 1977. Since 2011, when the Flying Salukis surprised many competitors by winning a then-seventh national championship, the team has nine straight top 3 national finishes. That includes championships in 2014 and 2015 and second-place showings in 2016 and earlier this year.
